Activities in 2013

1. Health Check up Programmes for Construction Workers.
a) Four free eye-checks up camps were organized with the support from Vision Foundation and the Centre for Development, Education and Research. These camps were organized at Vashi Naka, Nerul Naka, Belapur Naka, Kamothe, and Kharghar. More than 400 hundred Naka workers benefitted from these camps. Some workers also provided with spectacles at very minimum cost. Eleven workers were referred for Cataracts Surgery which was made free of cost.




b) Three Medical Checkup camps were organized on the eve of World AIDs Day on 1st December 2013 and on 22nd December 2013 at Panvel. A team of three Doctors was provided by the Satya Sari Baba Trust for this purpose. Free medicines were distributed. 600 construction and allied workers. These camps were organized at Panvel naka in cooperation with the support of Panvel Mazdoor Samajik Sanstha.





2. Awareness campaigns on Workers Rights
a) The Building and Other Construction Workers ( Regulation of Employment and Condi9tions of Services) Act, 1976 provides Welfare schemes for all construction workers including the Naka Workers. Unfortunately, Naka workers are facing lot of problems to get the benefit under the said Act. The AILS and CDEAR therefore launched an awareness campaign at 10 places (Nakas) through Street plays for creating awareness about the rights of the construction workers. The street plays were organized in collaboration with NIRMAN.



b) More than 2000 handouts were distributed giving the details about the Welfare Schemes announced by the Government for construction workers.

Training Programme on BizSim/STYREX and Company Performance Analysis and Labour Economics

A four day Training Programme on BizSim / STYREX and Company Analysis and Labour Economics was oreganised jointly by the AILS and MKI with technical support of the EIAS and funded by EUD. It was organized from 13th to 16th December 2013 at Lonavala. The participants were invited from the Affiliate unions of the INTUC, HMS and other independent unions operating at local and national level. About 35 participants including some management representatives attended the programme.



Visibility Conference:
This visibility conference was organized at Mumbai jointly by the AILS and MKI on 18th December 2013. More than 125 people from the trade union groups, academicians, and employers' group, beneficiaries of the WSC and the organisors and coordinators of WSC attended the conference. The representatives of the project partners Dr. George Mathew, Chairman ISS, Mr. Bo Jonson, Project Expert and Mrs. Chanda Prasad, Project Coordinator, EAIS were also present on the occasion. Mr. Eduard van Kleunen, Consul, Consulate General of Belgium, Mr. Govind Mohite, General Secretary, RMMS, Mr. J.R. Bhosale, Treasurer, HMS, and Sis. Jeanne Devos, National Coordinator, National Domestic Workers Movement.


On Going Activities

The Institute is participating in a joint project on "Impact of the EU-India FTA on Human and Social Rights Issues. The other partners are The Maniben Kara Institute, Mumbai and the European Institute.
